James Jean

Jean was born in Taiwan, raised in New Jersey, and attended the School of Visual Arts in New York.
He currently lives and works in Los Angeles.
Known for this virtuosic ability to work across different genres and mediums, he quickly gained notoriety as the youngest and most awarded cover artist in comics history, garnered numerous industry honors, and has influenced a generation of artists and illustrators with his imaginative and multifaceted approach to making work.
Using pictorial conventions from such varied sources as Japanese Woodblock prints, Northern Renaissance paintings and etchings, Shanghai advertising posters, and comics, Jean’s images evoke a sense of fantasy and the subconscious.
His vision was an integral part of Prada’s 2008 collection in a global campaign that incorporated murals, fabric prints, installations, and an animated film. Since then, he has given up illustrating in favor of paintings, book projects, and gallery shows, and has held exhibitions of his work in New York, Los Angeles, London, Hong Kong. and Tokyo.
