From August 2nd to August 24th, Kaikai Kiki Gallery is excited to announce that we will be presenting In Search of a Lull, a solo exhibition by Japanese artist Emi Kuraya.

After holding a solo exhibition at Hidari Zingaro and becoming represented by Kaikai Kiki in 2018, Emi Kuraya has gained further popularity this year through her participation in Hong Kong Art Basel and Frieze New York. This time exhibiting in the more spacious Kaikai Kiki Gallery, she has created a larger series of works utilizing the gallery space. We invite you to come witness Emi Kuraya’s most diverse exhibition yet.

About the exhibition:

I have been painting girls on canvases for a year now. For me, the act of painting girls is similar to the act of recording your thoughts and experiences into a diary. Each girl is a representation of a collection of people and images that I have encountered. I strive to one day figure out who this girl on the canvas is.

Message from the artist:

When looking back at the girls I’ve drawn, I realized most of them were born from dark feelings and experiences. And I have the feeling that hiding inside that darkness is a little bit of light. I believe that when I am able to touch this darkness and light, I might finally be able to understand how to connect the darkness inside of me with the outside world.
