Haruka Makita

Profile

Focusing on images of women with old-fashioned nihongami hairstyles as her primary motif, Haruka Makita's works explore the thematic line between kawaii (cute) and kowai (frightening).

Her works on paper, rendered in acrylic, ink, suihi e-nogu and other traditional materials reflect the influence of ukiyoe and bijinga. By combining her own unique aesthetic, cultivated in the internet age, with the expressive techniques of nihonga, her women evoke both tradition and the collective emotions of young girls living today.

The fine detail and accomplished nature of her work earned her early attention and she began exhibiting as an artist while still attending university. Lately she has expanded her range to include images of women in student uniforms and western clothes in addition to kimono.
