He Xiangyu

He Xiangyu portrait

Profile

Born 1986, Lianoning, China. Graduated from the Oil Painting Department at Shenyang Normal University. Currently based in Beijing and Berlin. Well-known for large scale and controversial projects such as "The Cola Project" featuring 127ton of old Coca Cola can residue, and "Tank Project" in which he constructed a Chinese military tank using leather. While creating works that are highly conceptual, his pieces strongly critique history and modern society. He has commanded international attention as the voice of the generation raised during the period of Chinese economic reform.
