About the artists

Fukujuro Murakami

Born in 1934 in Moji in Kitakushu, Fukuoka Prefecture. The war ended when he was in fifth grade and he joined the Self-Defense Force at the age of twenty as an artilleryman. After leaving the SDF, he headed for Tokyo and, following an employment with an ironworks, made his living by driving a taxi from 1961 until 2009. He began making art while working as a taxi driver.

Takashi Murakami

Born in 1962 in Tokyo. The oldest son of Fukujuro. He completed his doctoral work at Tokyo University of the Arts’ School of Fine Arts and became the first student at the university to earn a doctoral degree in the field of Nihonga. He is the president of Kaikai Kiki Co., Ltd. In addition to holding solo shows at museums around the world, he expresses his aesthetics via a variety of outlets including feature films and an animated TV series.

Yuji Murakami

Born in 1964 in Tokyo. The younger son of Fukujuro. A graduate of Tokyo University of the Arts, Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Painting, majoring in Nihonga, he is the winner of the Taikan prizes at the Japan Art Institute Inten exhibitions in 1997 and ’99. In 2008, he began initiation in Buddhist practice at Enryakuji, Hieizan Gyo-in. In the recent years, he unveiled two Nihonga paintings featuring superheroes Ultraman and Kamen Rider. Currently, he is a fellow at the Japan Art Institute.
