Kaikai Kiki Gallery are pleased to announce a solo exhibition by Kazumi Nakamura, opening on Friday September 5, 2014.

Nakamura began his career while studying art theory and history at Tokyo University of the Arts. Though he originally intended to become a scholar, in 1979 he began creating his own works as a way of establishing a unique theory of painting and subsequently caught the attention of Kōji Enokura, who was at the time teaching oil painting at the University. At the strong encouragement of Enokura, Nakamura ceased his efforts to become an academic and in the early 1980’s began devoting himself to painting full time. After a solo show in 1981, he took part in several exhibitions over the coming years, becoming the most recognized abstract painter in Japan. These years of fruitful creative activity were then followed by a period of relative silence which continued until this Spring, when he was granted a large-scale retrospective at The National Art Center, Tokyo, and his work began to acquire renewed interest. He has declared his long term goal as “the establishment of a form of painting that operates on a different dimension from the absoluteness, centeredness, wholeness, and purity of western painting.” In this exhibition, we will present over ten works, selected by the artist, which show the results of his over thirty year exploration of originality and ubiquity.

On the heels of last month’s exhibition for Monoha legend Lee Ufan, Kaikai Kiki Gallery is proud to present work by an abstract painter who is one of the key nodes in the history of contemporary Japanese art.
