SCAI PARK × Kaikai Kiki Gallery Concurrent Exhibitions
Jean Pigozzi Solo Exhibitions
June 1, 2018 – June 16, 2018

From June 1st to June 16th, 2018, Kaikai Kiki Gallery and SCAI PARK are pleased to present a concurrent exhibition of works by the French-born Italian artist, businessman, designer, and photographer, Jean Pigozzi.

Pigozzi picked up a Leica camera as an adolescent and began formulating a diaristic style that revolved around his observations of upper–class life. While attending Harvard University, he made regular sojourns to New York City where he mingled with artists and tastemakers, taking photographs in close proximity. His “sophisticated snapshots,” significantly influenced by Robert Frank and Helmut Newton, are candid and intimate: friends including Andy Warhol, Anjelica Huston, and Diane von Furstenberg, among others, are captured in scenes of social revelry or voluptuous leisure.

CHARLES AND SAATCHI is a series of energetic snapshots that capture Pigozzi’s dogs in striking monochrome, while POOL PARTY PHOTOS BY JEAN PIGOZZI is set in a famous swimming pool at Pigozzi’s house in France, where big-name celebrities regularly socialize.

The two series, centred around subject matter intimate to Pigozzi, are a record of Pigozzi’s personal life, as well as the embodiment of everyday life that has been arranged and directed for endless photo-documentation. Subjects in Pigozzi’s photographs are conscious of the photographer’s presence, while Pigozzi himself often appears in his own photographs; affirming the role of the camera as a tool for his keen engagement with the world.

MY LIFE AS A DOG

Do you believe in reincarnation?
According to a Gallup Poll, about a quarter of us in the West firmly do. The figure is even higher among hundreds of millions of Hindus and Buddhists, who adhere to the notion of an immortal soul. They are convinced that we return again and again to life on Earth, in one form or another – a cat, a mouse, an elephant, a bird – before once again assuming human form.

Personally, I have always sensed that the Fates intend to resurrect me for my next life as a dog. And what could be more agreeable than enjoying my future days as one of Jean Pigozzi’s pets? As you can see here, they are particularly handsome creatures, and that is clearly befitting. Also appropriately, you will also note they are keenly intelligent, and highly sophisticated.

With Mr. Pigozzi as their owner, their important daily activities are being recorded for posterity by one of the world’s great photographers. His remarkable skills in observational studies are as outstanding as Cindy Sherman’s mastery of self-portraiture. With good fortune, when my time comes, I will spring back to life as an offspring of one of the noble dogs pictured here, and enjoy many serene years as one of Mr. Pigozzi’s most treasured companions.

Johnny is one of the world’s greatest characters. I don’t really know what he does, though, apart from always taking those pictures.
—Elton John

I’m obsessed with recording things.
—Jean “Johnny” Pigozzi

The famous “blue pool” at the Pigozzi family’s Villa Dorane at Cap d’Antibes, France has seen actors, models, musicians, and photographers since it was built in 1953. Apart from being the focus of Pigozzi’s numerous photographs, glamorous birthday parties and Vogue photoshoots have also been hosted there. Color and black-and-white photographs of celebrities including Bono, Mick and Bianca Jagger, Elizabeth Taylor, Naomi Campbell, David Geffen, Jack Nicholson, Robert De Niro, Sharon Stone, Elle Macpherson, Helmut Newton, and Julian Schnabel are brought to life with dramatic light and playful pool-toy props, celebrating the fun and whimsy of the boisterous glitterati.
