Kaikai Kiki Gallery is pleased to announce “NO MANNER”, the first solo exhibition by Hisashi Eguchi with Kaikai Kiki, to open on January 17, 2023. Hisashi Eguchi led the field with his comedy manga in the 1980s, when manga expanded in scale to become a major industry in Japanese culture. He then began to focus on beautifully depicting women, and continues to be at the forefront, influencing the entire creative industry to this day.

Kaikai Kiki Gallery introduced Eguchi’s works for the first time at Taipei Dandai and Art Basel Hong Kong in 2022, namely two large paintings produced at Kaikai Kiki Studio based on the artist’s original illustrations. His works, which have been gaining many followers in today’s contemporary art world, have also attracted keen attention from collectors as the originator of a genre. The exhibition, his much-awaited first solo show, will feature 15 new paintings. Once again, the paintings are produced at Kaikai Kiki Studio based on Eguchi’s original drawings, completed after the process of repeated reviews and approvals by the artist. We sincerely look forward to welcoming you at the gallery.

Event Details

In the past few years, the Japanese art world has seen an increase in the number of paintings with women as the main subject, with a strong and apparent influence from manga artist and illustrator Hisashi Eguchi.

While Hisashi Eguchi is both a manga artist and an illustrator, he transcends the genres and is highly popular as a “painter,” and many of his solo exhibitions have been held at art museums. The publication of his art book titled “KING OF POP” led to a touring exhibition held at eight public museums and more in Japan between 2015 and 2017, while the “KANOJO” exhibition, which opened in 2018 at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, has been touring since, to eight venues as of 2022. During this time, Eguchi himself has gradually melted the boundaries between art and manga in the process.

In this exhibition, we are presenting his paintings that newly incorporate rules and methods of contemporary art into his work.
The deciphering of this “rules and methods” may very well be one of the highlight of this exhibition. The assessment of his true artistic skill, as well as whether he, the artist capable of traversing across industries, can gain the trust of the people involved, shall itself challenge and question the very nature of art.

I believe this exhibition, with its many layers, will allow you to understand the essence of “Superflat,” which I, Takashi Murakami, have been advocating for more than 20 years since 2000.
