Kaikai Kiki Gallery is proud to announce a solo exhibition for ceramic artist Shin Murata. In preparation for the exhibition, Murata traveled to the Korean county of Muan, searching their for rare clays which he fired on-site in a local kiln. He also built a new kiln, based on the anagama model which he had used in Korea, after returning to his workspace in Kumogahata, Kyoto. The majority of the exhibition will focus on these clay works. We hope you will visit the show to see this celebrated ceramic artist undertake a challenge that few attempt in this day and age.
I like the unadorned charm I find within imperfections.
As I get better, I feel as thought I lose some of the attractiveness in my work.
So I hope to always cherish the sense of freshness.
I need to challenge myself and put myself in a tight spot.
Shin Murata
Shin Murata is a ceramicist who gives his all to generating and grasping a grain of Ubu, the ultimate artistic essence.
The technical training required for the process leading up to the loading of the kiln culminates in the experiential skill that allows him to fire his vessels with confidence. When he encounters the resulting blend of coincidence and inevitability that emerges from the cooled kiln, he judges the result in a flash.
The entirety of Murata’s art depends on that instant; we, the viewers, are merely allowed a glimpse at the residual glow. Such is the workings of his art.
Let us, then, accept such delight on this occasion.
